The American Legion Mountaineer Boys State (ALMBS) is West Virginia’s premier leadership and citizenship experience for high school juniors—part of the national Boys State program founded in 1935. Established in 1936, ALMBS proudly holds the second-oldest charter in the nation and remains the only Boys State program still held at its original location: WVU Jackson’s Mill.

Each June, approximately 400 young men become “Citizens” of Mountaineer Boys State, where they take on real-world roles in city, county, and state government. Through hands-on simulations, elections, and career tracks—from law enforcement and journalism to emergency services and business—participants gain a deeper understanding of civic duty, leadership, and teamwork.
