Monday evening, Mountaineer Boys State citizens welcome West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Kent Leonhardt, whose career spans military service, farming and public office.

Leonhardt has led the West Virginia Department of Agriculture since 2017 and has become a prominent advocate for the state’s agricultural industry. Before becoming commissioner, he served in the West Virginia Senate and built a successful farming operation in Monongalia County. His background also includes distinguished service in the United States Marine Corps, where he retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Throughout his career, Leonhardt has focused on strengthening rural communities, supporting farmers and promoting economic opportunities throughout West Virginia. His experience gives him a unique understanding of how local industries, public policy and community leadership work together.

For Boys State citizens, Leonhardt’s story demonstrates that leadership opportunities exist far beyond the walls of government offices. Whether serving in uniform, operating a business or holding elected office, meaningful leadership begins with a commitment to improving the lives of others.

As citizens continue building their model government, Leonhardt’s remarks provide insight into how state agencies serve residents and support key industries across West Virginia.

Mountaineer Boys State is one of the nation’s premier hands-on leadership and citizenship programs, giving young men the opportunity to build and operate a model government while developing the skills needed for a lifetime of service.
