Mountaineer Boys State welcomes one of higher education’s most accomplished leaders as West Virginia University President Michael T. Benson addresses the Monday evening assembly.
Benson became the 27th president of West Virginia University in 2025 after a distinguished career leading colleges and universities across the country. Prior to arriving in Morgantown, he served as president of Coastal Carolina University, Eastern Kentucky University, Southern Utah University and Snow College.
A respected scholar and historian, Benson has devoted much of his career to expanding educational opportunities and preparing students for leadership roles in their professions and communities. His academic background includes studies at Brigham Young University, Oxford University, the University of Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins University.
His appearance at Boys State highlights the important connection between education and leadership. Citizens spend the week exploring government and public service, but they are also considering future educational and career paths.
Benson’s message encourages participants to pursue excellence, remain curious and continue developing the knowledge and skills necessary to make meaningful contributions to society.
Mountaineer Boys State is one of the nation’s premier hands-on leadership and citizenship programs, giving young men the opportunity to build and operate a model government while developing the skills needed for a lifetime of service.
