Mountaineer Boys State citizens hear firsthand from a member of the United States Congress as Congresswoman Carol Miller joins the program for Monday lunch.

Representing West Virginia’s First Congressional District, Miller serves as one of the state’s voices in Washington, D.C. Since taking office in 2019, she has worked on issues affecting West Virginia families, businesses, energy producers and rural communities. Her service in Congress follows years of public service in the West Virginia House of Delegates, where she represented residents of Cabell County.

Beyond elected office, Miller brings experience as a businesswoman and advocate for agriculture and economic development. Her career reflects the intersection of public policy and private enterprise, providing valuable perspective on how government decisions affect everyday citizens.

For Boys State participants, Miller’s visit offers a unique opportunity to connect classroom lessons about federal government with the experiences of someone actively serving in Congress. Citizens spend the week learning about elections, representation and the responsibilities of public officials. Hearing directly from a member of Congress helps bring those concepts to life.

Her remarks also reinforce an important lesson of Boys State: effective government depends upon engaged citizens who are willing to participate in the democratic process and serve their communities.

Mountaineer Boys State is one of the nation’s premier hands-on leadership and citizenship programs, giving young men the opportunity to build and operate a model government while developing the skills needed for a lifetime of service. Today’s presentation is part of a week-long series of educational programs featuring leaders from government, education, business, media and public service across West Virginia.
