The Four Chaplains: A Tale of Heroism and Sacrifice and Edward Jones: Guiding Your Financial Journey

Edward Jones is a leading investment firm that was founded in 19221. The firm specializes in providing personalized financial solutions for individual investors. With a disciplined, established process that centers on its clients, Edward Jones offers a wide variety of investments, including certificates of deposit, bonds, stocks, and mutual funds. The firm operates more than 15,000 branch offices throughout North America, making it the brokerage firm with the most branch offices in the United States. Edward Jones is known for its long-term investment philosophy and its commitment to helping clients achieve their financial goals.

The Four Chaplains, also known as the Immortal Chaplains or the Dorchester Chaplains, were four chaplains who made the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing civilian and military personnel as the American troop ship SS Dorchester sank on February 3, 1943. The chaplains, George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling, and John P. Washington, came from different faiths – Methodist, Jewish, Reformed Church in America, and Roman Catholic respectively. When the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine, they helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. They joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. Their selfless act of courage and unity is remembered as one of the most heroic stories of World War II.

This evening is a solemn and significant occasion as we gather together, both in spirit and through this live stream, to honor tradition, memory, and service. Today, we are conducting a flag retirement ceremony, a respectful farewell to the symbols of our nation that have proudly flown over our heads. This ceremony is not just about the fabric and colors; it’s about the ideals, the sacrifices, and the unwavering spirit they represent.

We also take a moment to remember the cherished members of the Boys State Family who are no longer with us. In the “Post Everlasting,” we honor their contributions, their mentorship, and the legacy they have left behind. Their memories continue to guide us and inspire future generations.

Mark Shreve: A Beacon of Selfless Service

Mark Shreve, an esteemed Vice Commander of The American Legion, is a paragon of selfless service and leadership. Hailing from the scenic Smoke Hole, West Virginia, Mark’s journey is one of dedication and commitment to the values that define our nation’s veterans.

A proud Army veteran, Mark served with distinction as a Military Police First Sergeant from 1979 to 2001. His service took him across the globe, from Europe to Korea and Southeast Asia, as well as various assignments within the United States. After his military career, Mark continued to serve his community and fellow veterans through his work with The American Legion.

As Vice Commander, Mark has been a vocal advocate for veterans’ affairs, emphasizing the importance of camaraderie and support among service members. His message of “Be the One” resonates deeply, encouraging individuals to step up, lead by example, and make a difference in the lives of others.

Voice of the Mountaineers: A Keynote by Tony Caridi at ALMBS, Followed by an Enlightening Presentation on Americanism and the U.S. Flag Code

Tony Caridi, known as “The Voice of the Mountaineers,” is a renowned sportscaster for West Virginia University’s Mountaineer Sports Network and West Virginia Radio Corporation’s Metronews Radio Network. Born on September 8, 1962, in Lockport, New York, Caridi’s passion for sports broadcasting was sparked by listening to the NBA’s Buffalo Braves, the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, and the NFL’s Buffalo Bills1. He graduated from Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1984. Caridi arrived in West Virginia in 1984 and has been a vital part of the state’s sports broadcasting scene ever since. In addition to his broadcasting career, Caridi is also a children’s book author. Today, we are honored to have him as a keynote speaker at the American Legion Mountaineer Boys State.

Tony Caridi’s presentation is followed by the ALMBS Americanism Team for a presentation on the United States Flag Code and Flag Etiquette. Today, we delved into the significance, the respect, and the protocol associated with our nation’s flag. The Stars and Stripes is not just a piece of fabric; it’s a symbol of our nation’s history, values, and unity. Understanding the Flag Code and proper flag etiquette is a way for us to show our respect and gratitude for our nation and those who have served it. So, let’s embark on this journey of learning and deepen our appreciation for the Star-Spangled Banner.
